Upside Down Cake

July 19, 2013

Oh how I love a good cocktail. You know what else I love? Cake. You know what I really really love? Cocktails that taste like cake! Have you had the Smirnoff Iced Cake flavored vodka yet? No? Stop everything and run to your nearest liquor store. I’ll wait. I know, I know. It’s yet another flavored vodka, but trust me on this one. It even smells like a slice of cake with icing. Seriously, how do they do that…and can I be involved in the testing? I found this recipe on a cute little recipe tag around a bottle of regular vodka. Upside Down Cake. You know, like pineapple upside down cake! With no strategically placed pineapple rings or cherries or that special pan to worry about. Cheers!

So, how’s it taste?

It tastes like a big ol’ slice of pineapple upside down cake. It may sound odd to drink your cake, but it works. The pineapple and orange juices brighten up the heavy cake-flavored vodka. The pineapple is a bit tart and the o.j. sweetens it up. Top it with a bit of club soda and it all evens out and adds a bit of bubbly. The instructions suggest a highball glass, which I would recommend, but the picture showed a martini glass, so that’s what we went for. The martini glass is cute. I rimmed it with red, white, and blue sugar (festive for the 4th), and the cherry was at the bottom. Multicolored sprinkles would look great too (like on cake!). We made subsequent batches (oh there were many, many batches) using a highball glass. We liked that the drink stayed cold with a few cubs of ice and didn’t want to bother with the fancy sugar anymore. If you want to make your highball glass festive, put two cherries on a toothpick and balance it on the rim of the glass. Just like I did here with the Van Tiffin.

I loved this cocktail. It’s sweet, it’s sour, it reminds me of cake and that puts me in my happy place. Bottoms up!

Upside Down Cake

by Smirnoff
makes 1 serving

Ingredients:

2 oz. Smirnoff® Iced Cake Flavored Vodka
1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
club soda
maraschino cherry, for garnish

Directions:

1. Add the vodka, orange juice, and pineapple juice to a shaker full of ice. Shake. Pour into a martini or highball glass*. Top with club soda and garnish with a cherry.

*We preferred the highball glass with a few cubes of ice over the martini glass.

Disclaimer: I am not associated with Smirnoff, nor do they have anything to do with this post. I just enjoy their cake-flavored vodka!

Looks as delicious as I had imagined! Can’t wait to pick up a bottle and try this cocktail. Love that it’s just one type of liquor and I don’t need to buy anything fussy or fancy I won’t use again for ages.
